History

The Phoenicians had discovered Lepe by approximately 24 centuries ago where Moslem and Jewish cultures proliferate here until the 24 th century. The moniker of Lepe is not a sheer twist of fate as to its origin. It is presumed to have come from Laepa, which is Phoenician in origin. Another assumption suggests that it owes its name to the Roman legion Leptis which was seated by this zone. The history of Lepe can be traced way to the River "Rio Piedras" which served to help the products of their fields, mostly in the forms of famous figs, towards the north of Europe, which today is replaced by the sweet strawberry.

As for monumental remnants of its past, you can visit in here the temple Santo Domingo of Guzmán , which is of 15th century. This temple shelters the Image Ntra, Santa Maria of the Beautiful one, made of the most beautiful height of the 15th century. There s also the Tower of the Catalan that is of the 14th century. It was erected in order to defend the coast from the Moorish piracy. In the enclosure of The Lump is where The Pilgrimage of Ntra is held to honor of the convent of Santa Maria of the Beautiful one to whom the Franciscan sheltered the Virgin up to its definitive transfer to Lepe .
